Latest Additions to Mac Directory

by Derrick Story
08/28/2001

When we launched the Mac Open Source Software Directory earlier this month, we knew that some good titles would be missing. Fortunately we've received a number of solid updates in the last couple weeks, and we've included many of them in the current listing. (See below)

Working on navigation

We've also received some good suggestions for UI improvement, many of which were already in our plans. The two most important enhancements in the next version will be:

  1. Category listings for the software so that you can scan titles in a particular area of interest.
  2. A "Current Additions" box at the top of the directory so you can see the latest titles we've posted.

New software titles

Here are a few of the latest titles we've just posted:

AmphetaDesk
AmphetaDesk is a news aggregator. It sits on your desktop, downloads the latest news that interests you, and displays them in a quick and easy-to-use web page. With 1,000+ channels for selection, AmphetaDesk can shave hours off your day when it comes to news reading. And you'll look smart to all your friends! Egotism never had it better!

Euro Converter
Euro Converter is a currency converter and can exchange Euro to one of the 12 European currencies that agreed to Unified Currency. Conversions can be made from Euro to a single currency and also between currencies. Results can be copied and pasted in other applications.

fink
fink is a package manager for Mac OS X and Darwin. It's based on Debian Linux's apt, and downloads, patches, compiles, and installs a variety of Unix programs on these systems. fink understands dependencies, can remove packages cleanly, works in its own directory, and is being enhanced to install binary packages as well as from source.

FlightGear
The FlightGear Flight Simulator project is a free, open-source, multi-platform, cooperative flight simulation development project with realistic effects and international scenery.

F-Script
F-Script is an open-source scripting environment for Mac OS X. It's based on Smalltalk syntax and concepts, but instead of using Smalltalk's object model and frameworks, it uses the Cocoa object model and Cocoa frameworks. F-Script provides interactive and scripting access to Cocoa objects.

MacHTTP
MacHTTP is the original Web server created for Macintosh. This project attempts to resurrect and update this venerable piece of Internet history. The original developer, Chuck Shotton, still maintains it.

MacTelnet
An incomplete NCSA Telnet upgrade that has been re-designed from the ground up to be a modern Macintosh application, with new support for key Apple technologies, and greatly enhanced ease-of-use.

The source code, written in C, has been released under GNU's GPL and LPL (for respectively the application-dependent and application-independent parts). The final release will be targeted for Mac OS 8 through Mac OS X (featuring a special Mac OS X-native release), although currently it runs reliably only on Mac OS 8.5 through 9.1 and in Classic mode on Mac OS X.

Mini vMac
Mini vMac is a minor spin-off of the program vMac. Its goal is to provide the simplest usable emulation of a Mac Plus, instead of the fastest or most usable emulation. It can serve as a programmer's introduction to vMac, having only about one-tenth as much source code. It can be used to run old software that otherwise couldn't be used on recent machines. Like vMac, it requires a ROM image file to run, and so can be legally used only by those who own a Mac Plus.

R Project for Statistical Computing
R is "GNU S" -- A language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. R is similar to the award-winning S system, which was developed at Bell Laboratories by John Chambers et al. It provides a wide variety of statistical and graphical techniques -- linear and nonlinear modeling, statistical tests, time series analysis, classification, and clustering.
