The big news is, of course, that Mac OS X will hit the streets on March 24, and that many ADC developers already have the CD and are testing it. We'll keep our fingers on this pulse ...

Here at O'Reilly, we're working on a column that will run every other week that focuses on Cocoa and how to use the programming environment. Not only will we introduce you to object-oriented programming, but we'll also show you how to use Apple's excellent tools to develop your own Mac OS X applications. We hope to launch the column the first week of April.

Another project underway for the Mac DevCenter is a directory of open source software for the Mac. We'll include applications for Mac OS X, but we'll also have many listings for OS 9 and earlier. With any luck at all, this directory will go live sometime in April.

I'll keep you posted on both of these projects here in Mac Dev News Roundup. So watch for more details. Now, on to this week's news.

Carbon tips and tricks

Apple Developer Connection has created a helpful page for developers working with Carbon. It's called Carbon Tips & Tricks. There's lots of useful code, and plenty of helpful Carbon-related links too.

Tighten-up your web pages with HTML-Optimizer 4.1.1

HTML-Optimizer 4.2 reduces the size of your HTML pages by 10 to 15 percent by removing unnecessary characters and tags. It also checks and reports on errors in your HTML code and validates hyperlinks. It's a free download from Ton's Software.

Mac OS programming watering hole

Introduction to Mac OS Programming provides a wealth of information to help developers, including online documentation, technical notes, technical Q&As, and more. There are tutorials for Carbon, Cocoa, and Java to help you get familiar with those environments. Plus there's sample code, programming tools, and SDKs. Not a bad place to hang out.

AirPort 1.3 driver available, and handy documentation to go with it

AirPort 1.3 now incorporates Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) and DHCP client ID support, functionality that may be required by some Internet Service Providers. Also, the AirPort Base Station and Card have been awarded Wi-FiTM certification, which ensures interoperability between various manufacturers' wireless networking products.

You can download AirPort 1.3, a 7.4 MB file, from Apple's web site. You'll need Mac OS 9.0.4 or higher to run it.

Designing AirPort Networks 1.3 is a document in PDF format that includes important information on extending the capabilities of the AirPort Base Station.

Developer training and seminars

AppleScript Intensive Workshop on March 26-29, in Cupertino CA, is a four-day interactive experience for interim and advanced scripters.
Apple WebObjects Programming Classes are five-day programming courses available worldwide.
Programming with Cocoa, taught by Aaron Hillegass at the Big Nerd Ranch, Asheville, NC, and Atlanta, GA, is a 5-day class series on developing applications for Mac OS X.
